Goethe klasszikus levélregénye először 1774-ben jelent meg. Bibliofil kiadásunkat az 1901-ben alapított Insel-Verlag gondozta, mely a századelőn a Goethe-művek legfontosabb kiadója volt. Kötetünk illusztrációi Daniel Chodowiecki XVIII. századi német rézmetszőtől valók, a rézmetszetek először a mű 1775-1787 közötti kiadásaiban jelentek meg. Oldalszámozáson belül további két szövegközti rézmetszet.
