Ausztrália 1956. "Olympic Games Melbourne 1956 / CITIUS ALTIUS FORTIUS" bronz olimpiai részvételi érem, kapszulában. Szign.: Mészáros Andor (1900-1972) (63mm). Az 1956-os Olimpia november 22. és december 8. között rendezték Melbourne-ben, vagyis a Játékok kezdete az 1956-os magyar forradalom leverése után egy hónappal volt. Ez alaposan rányomta a bélyegét az eseményre, hiszen emiatt (és a szuezi válság miatt) több ország is lemondta a részvételt, valamint ennek okán kapta az Melbourne-i vérfürdő nevet a Magyarország - Szovjetunió vízilabdamérkőzés, amely a játékosok közti verekedésbe torkollt, miközben a hatezres nézőtérre bezsúfolódott nyolcezer néző kezdettől tüntetően a magyar csapatot biztatta, és a szovjetek minden labdaérintését hatalmas füttyszó kísérte. Az összecsapást 4-0-ra nyerte meg a magyar csapat. Ez az esemény megjelent a Szabadság, szerelem című mozifilmben is, bár ott (a művészi szabadság jegyében) döntőként játszották le a meccset, míg a valóságban a másnapi Jugoszlávia elleni mérkőzés döntötte el az elsőséget. Az egész Olimpia legeredményesebb versenyzői Keleti Ágnes magyar és Larisza Latinyina szovjet tornásznők voltak, mindketten három egyéni és egy csapatgyőzelemnek voltak részesei, míg Papp László ökölvívásban a harmadik olimpiai bajnokságát nyerte meg. The 1956 Olympics were held in Melbourne from November 22 to December 8, meaning the Games began a month after the suppression of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. This left a deep mark on the event, as several countries cancelled their participation because of this (and the Suez Crisis), and the Hungary-Soviet Union water polo match was nicknamed the Blood in the Water match, which resulted in a brawl between players, while the eight thousand spectators who had packed the six-thousand-capacity stadium, cheered the Hungarian team from the start, and every touch of the Soviets' ball was accompanied by a loud whistle. The Hungarian team won the match 4-0. This event was also featured in the film Children of Glory (2006), although there (in the spirit of artistic freedom) the match was played as a final, while in reality the next day match against Yugoslavia decided the first place. The most successful competitors of the entire Olympics were Hungarian gymnasts Ágnes Keleti and Soviet gymnasts Larisa Latinina, both of whom won three individual and one team titles, while László Papp won his third Olympic championship in boxing.
