Humoros elbeszéléseivel, groteszk ötleteivel, adomáival, amelyeket freskóképeknek nevezett el, hamarosan népszerűségre tett szert. Gazsiádáit - eredeti élceit - Petőfi is szívesen hallgatta, olvasta és Bernátot barátságába is fogadta. Korabeli kopottas félvászon-kötésben, ajándékozási sorokkal.
