Description:

///

Zsolnay sculpture - Peasant ploughing with a plough.
Design: János Pásztor (1881?-1945). Circa 1900-1920, cast fine faience covered with silky-sheen eosin glazes. Minor wear; the handle of the plough and the shoulder has been restored. Dimensions: 41 × 40 cm. This design was realized in only a few examples.

///

Eosin is a collective term for several glazing and firing techniques. It has been known as a decorative process for centuries; for the Zsolnay factory it was developed at the end of the 19th century by Vilmos Zsolnay, Vince Wartha, and Lajos Petrik. During this decorative process, the objects are painted and fired repeatedly at progressively lower temperatures, resulting in a rainbow-like glazing with layers that partly overlap and partly merge into one another. In many cases, the surface is finally enhanced by acid etching to make it even more decorative.
