An early and powerful Southern study by Rosalind Fox Solomon, Mississippi Pair exemplifies her psychologically charged, humanist approach to portraiture. Made around 1970, the photograph reflects Solomon?s sustained engagement with the American South at a moment of profound social tension and transformation. The directness of the sitters and the quiet intensity of their interaction reveal the artist?s distinctive ability to distill complex emotional and social relationships into a single, resonant image. Works from Solomon?s early Southern series are highly regarded, forming a crucial foundation for her later international acclaim. Signed, stamped, and numbered examples of gelatin silver enlargements from this period are especially sought after, combining strong documentary presence with the artist?s unmistakable personal vision.
