"A Balánbánya fölött élő Tarkő nevű tündérnek volt két szép lánya, az egyiket Marosnak, a másikat Oltnak hívták. A két lány örökösen vitatkozott, ezzel is növelve édesanyjuk bánatát. Tarkő férje után epekedett, akit a tündérkirály a Fekete-tenger partjához űzött. A két lány egyszer felajánlotta édesanyjuknak, hogy megkeresik édesapjukat. A tündér folyóvá változtatta őket, s szigorúan meghagyta nekik, hogy mindig együtt haladjanak. A civakodó testvérek azonban megint nem tudtak megegyezni, és külön utakon indultak el. Maros szép csendesen átfolydogált a mezőkön, réteken, míg a Dunába nem ért. Olt átvágtatott a hegyeken, de mire a Vöröstoronyi-szoroshoz ért, igencsak elfáradt. A végkimerülés határán egyszer csak meghallotta testvére, Maros hangját. Boldogan ölelkeztek össze a Duna habjaival. Ahol a Duna beömlik a Fekete-tengerbe, meglátták édesapjukat, de mire megszólították volna, örökre elnyelték őket a tenger hullámai."


"A fairy named Tarkő, who lived above Balánbánya, had two beautiful daughters, one named Maros and the other named Olt. The two daughters were constantly arguing, which increased their mother's grief. Tarkő was jealous of her husband, whom the fairy king had chased to the shores of the Black Sea. The two daughters once offered their mother to find their father. The fairy turned them into rivers and strictly ordered them to always travel together. However, the quarreling siblings could not agree again and went their separate ways. Maros flowed quietly through the fields and meadows until it reached the Danube. Olt galloped over the mountains, but by the time he reached the Vöröstornyi Gorge, he was very tired. On the verge of exhaustion, he suddenly heard the voice of his brother, Maros. They happily embraced each other in the foam of the Danube. Where the Danube flows into into the Black Sea, they saw their father, but before they could speak to him, the waves of the sea swallowed them forever."
