It is actually a turned over sheet of stationery with the letterhead Commando Generale della Guardia Civica, the revolutionary militia of the Republic of San Marco, crossed out. No letter is enclosed, but the cover, marked N. 82, is dated June 18, 1849, during the last phase of the siege of Venice, two months before the surrender of the city.
