During the First World War KULPA steamship was requisitioned and outfitted as a hospital ship in the K.u.K. Kriegsmarine Danube Fleet (Donauflottille) in July 1914. SM Spitalschiff KULPA's first two captains were civilian employees of the DDSG, while the physicians appear to have been navy officers.
